She is the first Indian woman, in fact the first ever athlete to win a Gold in any format of a World track event. The teenager who made it globally with her raw talent has only been getting better with every race and only getting faster with every passing race.
Needless to say she is an inspiration to all the young boomers with a message that if you’re really passionate and dedicated towards your goal than anything is possible.
Hima Das was born in the wake of the new century on January 9th 2000. Infact, she had always wanted to be a footballer. Hima would play for the local clubs as a striker and was pretty good at it. However, it was only in 2016 wherein her PE coach told her to try her hand in an individual event. The rest as we all say is history.
Das is the youngest of the five kids of Ranjit and Jomali Das. Her parents have always been supportive of her career choice. Incredible indeed!
In an unfortunate state of affairs, Hima Das had absolutely no sports gear for her till 2 years ago.
Assam is known for its rice terrain and the sprinter would cover the lengths of the muddy fields of her school where her fellow schoolmates would play football. So much is her talent that within a few months of training, she qualified for state championships in Guwahati where she won a bronze medal.
Its surprising that Hima has never had any formal training. However she performed was all because of her raw strength. She made it to the finals of the Junior National Championships iin Coimbatore.
Hima really worked very hard on her running and timing. Post her Coimbatore success her two coaches spoke to her parents to let her take on full time training. Hima’s parents were extremely supportive and encouraged her for the same.
Her performance in the Federation Cup gave her the Golden ticket to the Commonwealth Games in Australia. She stood first in the 400 mts race with a timing of 51.97 seconds.
Ever since then there has been no looking back for her. Hima Das is a true champion at the mere age of 19 and it is heart-warming to see the World applauding her. She truly has made India proud we are all so thankful to her for flaring the National flag on International waters. We salute you Hima Das!
